Use the results, but check them

NLetterWords is built to be accurate and is tested against known reference values. It is still software written by people, running in a browser we do not control, on input we cannot see. Treat every result as a well-informed starting point rather than an authority.

Before you rely on a result for anything that matters — money owed to someone, a legal or tax position, a medical decision, a machined part, a navigational fix — check it against a second source.

Specific limits of this site

The word list is derived from ENABLE (the Enhanced North American Benchmark Lexicon), which is in the public domain. It is not the official tournament word list for any game. The North American list (TWL/NWL, licensed from Merriam-Webster by NASPA) and the international Collins list are both copyrighted and are not used here in whole or in part.

Whether a word is accepted in a game is decided by that game, not by this site. ENABLE agrees with the commercial dictionaries on the overwhelming majority of ordinary words and differs at the edges — obscure short words, recent additions, and words admitted to one list but not another.

The list shipped here is a curated subset of ENABLE, not the whole of it: every word of three to five letters, the everyday part of the six-to-nine-letter range, and no words longer than nine letters. A word being absent from a result does not mean it is not a word.

Scores use the standard English Scrabble tile values. Other word games — Words With Friends among them — use different values, and no board multipliers, blanks or bingo bonuses are accounted for. The number beside a word is the sum of its letters and nothing else.

Proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated forms and multi-word phrases are not in the list and will never be returned, so an anagram of a name or a phrase cannot be found here.
