The most common second letter is N, which follows E in 24 of them. 43 of them end in S, mostly plurals and third-person verbs.

On standard Scrabble tiles the most expensive are ENZYM (19), EPOXY (17), EQUIP (16). Tile values are a fact about the game rather than about English: a word scores well because its letters are rare, which is exactly why the top of that list is nobody's idea of a good opening guess.

What E does at the front of a word

E is the most common letter in English and one of its weakest openers. What it does open leans heavily on prefixes — EX-, EN-, EM-, EQUI- — rather than on roots of its own.

63 of them carry three or more vowels (EAGER, EAGLE, EAGRE and EARED). Those are the ones to reach for when the letters you have left are mostly vowels. Every one of them contains at least one of A, E, I, O or U, so there is no vowel-free E word at this length to fall back on.

Working through an E word in a puzzle

A first letter is worth less than it feels.
